Harper Concepts

Harper concept art and design work by Chile's amazing Maria Jose Barros Marfan.

I was so excited when I first recieved the two designs below. I had indicated to MJ that I wanted Harper to be a strong woman capable of surviving in the outdoors and that I'd like to use Zooey Deschanel as a starting point for the look. MJ fired back with the below in less than 24hrs and I fell in love, I hope the readers do as well.

Mission Logo Found on the Flight Suit

When I was making movies I loved collaborating with cast and crew members. Working with the amazing MJ is bringing back that feeling that I've been longing for. It's that moment when you think you have everything covered then out of nowhere a great question is put on the table that was overlooked and you're forced to investigate it.

So recently MJ brought up this great question of Ryder's flight suit and the fact it would have a mission logo on it. Something I completely overlooked and simply hadn't thought of but what a great opportunity to add to the mystery of Fate.

I had this idea and sent it to MJ, explained what I was looking for and below is what transpired. The last one is the mission badge which is modified off of the Apollo 11 badge. This is the rare opportunity to see a large version of it as it will be reduced in size considerably for the issues. I hope you like it, I think it's slammin'.

Ryder's Flight Suit Version 1.

Below is MJ's first version of Ryder in his flight suit. This was the first draft not the final version. As I post more versions you'll notice the gun holster drop farther down the leg paying an homage to Han Solo. When MJ and I discussed how Ryder would look, Matthew Fox from "Lost" was the actor I wanted him to resemble.

Ryder's Character Sketch Version 1

So below is the first concept and design work I received from the amazing Maria Jose Barros, or MJ for short. Suddenly I feel like Peter Parker, I have my own MJ, sweet! Anyway, Maria lives in Santiago Chile, I myself live in Vancouver Canada, so all our corespondence is done online. We had talked back and forth about the story and she blasted this concept out of Ryder and I'm telling you, to try and articulate the joy and overwelhming emotion I felt when I got this pic ... well it was like no other to say the least. It's as if finally everything clicked in my life. I come from a film industry background and I wrote a lot of spec scripts and often ran into producers asking to change this or that because it's just too expensive to do. For a writer this is often very hard. The surrounding environment, the action and challenges your characters face are so instrumental to the story and yes you must compromise in life but it's hard to see wicked scenes get cut because of budget constraints. But not anymore. Now MJ creates her magic. I have been a comic fan my whole life but I can't draw to save my life. Like I'm really really ... really awful fucking bad when it comes to drawing. So moving into comics never really seemed to fit.

Please keep checking in, more to come.
